RAT STUDY

Rat with pipeScientific studies using rats have recently shown what death investigators have known for nearly thirty years: Marijuana is truly a "gateway" drug.  Its use establishes a pattern of dependence that leads to the use of cocaine, heroin, and other illegal drugs.

According to the studies, withdrawal symptoms from heavy marijuana use are just like those from other drugs of abuse.  However, because the THC accumulates in the body and is excreted slowly, there are no acute withdrawal symptoms as with faster acting drugs like heroin and cocaine.

Chemical changes do occur in the brain of the pot smoker, increasing the desire to use drugs that will relieve the symptoms of withdrawal or the discomfort of stress.  Once the user gains relief by using marijuana or another drug, the use of the drug is reinforced and likely to continue.
