METHADONE

Front of clinicIn 1817, morphine was isolated from opium and was proposed as a cure for opium addiction.  Then in 1898, heroin was made from morphine and proposed as a cure for morphine addiction.  In 1942, German chemists synthesized methadone.  In 1960, methadone was proposed as a cure for heroin addiction and the methadone clinics were established.

Unfortunately, none of the treatments for drug addiction have resulted in a cure for a meaningful number of addicts.

Addict on clinic floorThis drug-related homicide involved a heroin dealer who was shot while in the waiting room of a methadone clinic.  Parked outside the clinic was his new car, and in his pocket were several thousand dollars in cash. A long needle track can be seen in the man's arm.
