MINT CANDY
This article describes a young man who came home from college on vacation. While away at school, he had become hooked on heroin. When he came home he had no source of drugs. He went into town to make a drug connection and was later found dead. His body was dumped in an abandoned car. There was a fresh needle mark in his arm and eight wads of mint chewing gum were found in his stomach. He died because he had been sold a more concentrated form of heroin than he could tolerate.
It is believed that nothing will relieve the pain of withdrawal except another fix or some mint candy. Whether mint candy works is uncertain. However, the police are aware of the folklore, and while interrogating a suspect who is in withdrawal, they munch on mint candy. If they get lucky, the junkie will tell them what they want to know in exchange for some of the mint candy.
